Cheeky Angel (天使な小生意気, Tenshi Na Konamaiki), sometimes titled "A Cheeky Angel" or simply "Tenkona" in japanese spaces, is a Shonen action-comedy written and illustrated by Hiroyuki Nishimori. It follows the story of 15 year old teenager Amatsuka Megumi as she tries to find a magic book that would turn her back into a boy.

It was published in Shogakukan's Weekly Shōnen Sunday on June 2, 1999 and finished on August 27, 2003.[1]

There are 199 chapters collected in 20 volumes. In the wide version, there's 201 chapters, including 2 chapters Nishimori couldn't publish beforehand.

While the manga and anime are relatively similar, the manga further fleshes out the story of the Gakusan Game Arc as the anime took a different approach due to having caught up with the manga before it finished.

Publication[]

The individual chapters were compiled and collected by Shogakukan in twenty tankōbon volumes, released between September 18, 1999 and September 18, 2003.[2][3]

The manga was published in English by Viz Media.[4] The first volume was released on July 7, 2004,[5] and the final volume on January 8, 2008.[6][7] Between May 12, 2015 and February 23, 2016, Viz Media re-published the series digitally . In March 2021, Viz Media confirmed that they no longer holds the series' license and english publication ceased entirely.

Trivia[]

  • Aka Akasaka, mangaka of Kaguya-sama: Love is War, mentioned that Cheeky Angel and Nishimori drew him to the path of being a mangaka. He used to watch Cheeky Angel episodes as it aired late at night, after his soccer practice and even collected the volumes.
  • Blue Lock character Gagamaru Gin lists Cheeky Angel as one of his favourite mangas.
  • Actor Takeru Satoh, most known for his role as Ryotaro Nogami in the Kamen Rider Den-O franchise, and as Himura Kenshin in the live-action Rurouni Kenshin film and its sequels, has stated before that his favourite manga is Cheeky Angel. His bookshelf even has a Megumi illustration drawn personally by Nishimori as a Thank you to Satoh.
  • The manga is constantly referenced in Nishimori's works that were made after Cheeky Angel. For example, in Hiiragi-sama, Genzo makes an appearance in the background on manga book and even appeared in a full panel when Hiiragi asks about his emotions. Megumi and Genzo also appeared in Kyo Kara Ore Wa: Sagara The Hero & Those Two on a tablet screen.
